Simultaneous living donor kidney deceased donor pancreas transplant succeeded

July 23rd, 2010 by DiabetesAdmin

On Sep. 13, Professor Han Dukjongs team in the Department of Surgery at AMC successfully performed a simultaneous deceased donor pancreas and living donor kidney transplant for a patient on dialysis due to extreme diabetic complications. There were cases of a simultaneous deceased donor kidney and pancreas transplant and a simultaneous living donor kidney and pancreas transplant. But this simultaneous living donor kidney and deceased donor pancreas transplant was the first of its kind in Korea. Normally, it takes about 5-6 years to receive a deceased donor kidney transplant, 1-2 years for a deceased donor pancreas transplant, and 3-4 years for a simultaneous deceased donor pancreas and kidney transplant. This simultaneous transplant is significant in that it eliminated the need for two separate surgeries and reduced the waiting time through receiving a kidney from a family member and pancreas from a deceased donor at the same time. Professor Han Dukjong / Department of Surgery Simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplants enable patients with severe diabetes to lead a normal, comfortable life by eliminating the need for dialysis, daily insulin injections and strict diets. It is expected to dramatically increase the survival rates and improve the quality of life. The feat achieved by Professor Hans team will serve as a watershed in diabetes treatment, giving hope to diabetic patients suffering from extreme complications and requiring daily insulin injections and dialysis

True or False statement about public health guidelines?

July 21st, 2010 by renske

People need to realize something : Public health guidelines have virtually nothing to do with public health . They have everything to do with appeasing the demands of powerful interests that aggressively lobby policy makers, provide money to researchers, and donate millions to influential health organizations like American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association , and so on.
