Several years ago, Tommy Johnson, at age of 28, looked at his mirror image in his home in Phoenix and wondered what was happening to his body, as he watched.

Hospitalized in Phoenix for several days of testing, Johnson was found to have Type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes.  He didn’t even have the time to go through denial, depression or any of the other classic emotional symptoms, says Johnson.

He had training camp coming up, and like hundreds of professional football players, his job was on the line, linked exactly to his performance in training camp.

Johnson relates that he just listened to what the doctor had to say about ways in which to keep his blood sugar levels, as close to normal as possible.

Taking Self-Responsibility

There are two major types of diabetes.  Type II or non-insulin-dependent diabetes represents about 90% o f all cases of diabetes.  However Type I diabetes is the more severe form of the disease.  This is a genetically-based chronic endocrine disorder of unknown cause, that affects the body’s ability to manufacture and utilize insulin, the hormone needed to break down sugars and starches into blood sugar (glucose), the body’s major energy source.

As a result, sugar levels in the blood become too high.  The cells of the pancreas (the small insulin-producing organ located behind the stomach) don’t function properly, making it difficult to metabolize food.  Since the glucose can’t be utilized, the levels raise dangerously; daily insulin injections are needed in order to live.  This differs from Type Ii diabetes, where insulin is produced but the amount is insufficient or else the cells can’t utilize it properly.

There are risks associated with exercise for the Type I, insulin-dependent diabetic – such as low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) – but if an athlete learns to control changing glucose levels by adjusting insulin levels and snacking on sugary, or slowly – absorbed carbohydrates when needed, and then it’s possible to exercise quite vigorously.

Other than insulin or diet, exercise is the most important factor in helping diabetics maintains proper blood sugar levels.

Workout Tips

Athletes with Type I diabetes can compete in any sport – as long as they closely monitor their blood sugar levels.

1. Exercise regularly, preferably at the same time each day to help you determine and stabilize your insulin and food requirements. 2. Exercise with someone else. This person should know that you have diabetes, be aware of the signs of hypoglycemia (confusion, weakness, unconsciousness, convulsions), and know how to respond in an emergency. 3. Don’t inject insulin into the muscle you will be exercising, or the insulin will be mobilized faster, and you will become hypoglycemic. 4. Most often, sports-active diabetics should keep their insulin dosage the same, and eat more food. If you repeatedly become hypoglycemic during or after exercise (despite increased food intake) talk to your physician about reducing your insulin. 5. To best determine our food/ insulin needs, you should monitor your blood glucose during training (for example, between laps of swimming or running). Also, you may have to re-check these needs when the weather changes from hot to cold. 6. Always exercise after eating, when your blood sugar is on the rise. Don’t start to exercise with low blood sugar; eat a snack first. 7. Always carry sugar, in some form, with you. Always have coins with you for food from a vending machine or an emergency phone call. 8. During long-term exercise, plan to constantly replace glucose supplies, at regular intervals. 9. On an extra-long hike or bike ride, eat six small meals containing both carbohydrate and protein (the protein is for sustained energy). Be over-prepared with extra food in case you are unexpectedly delayed. 10. Since exercise has a lingering effect, you should eat more than usual after you finish exercising. Other wise, you may become hypoglycemic that night, or even the next day.

Diabetes that occurs during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. This will, in most cages go away once the baby is born. Some side effects of gestational diabetes are an over sized baby, or it may have low blood sugar at the time of birth. If diagnosed with this, it is extremely important that the pregnancy be monitored closely. A diet can usually control it, but in some rear cases, insulin may have to be used.

Subtlety is another symptom of diabetes. Type I and Type II often have very similar systems. These can include blurry vision, dry mouth, increased thrust and frequent *********. Diabetes is a disease that develops when the pancreas stops making insulin. The body uses insulin to let glucose flow into the cells, where it is used for energy or stored for later. That is why Type 1 is often call Juvenile diabetes. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly and often first appear after an illness, such as the flu. These early symptoms are often overlooked. Typically, they include the following:

- Increased appetite.

- Sudden unexplained weight loss.

As the blood sugar levels increase, more obvious symptoms begin to occur. These include:

- Blurred vision

- Drowsiness

- Fast and shallow breathing

Early treatment and maintain proper blood sugar levels may keep the disease from becoming worse. If not, there may be complications from the disease. These would include the following:

In Type 2 diabetes blood sugar levels rise very slowly. Often the patient does not have any symptoms and may have the disease for many years without knowing it.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are usually overweight or not physically active. It is most often diagnosed in people over 40 but is becoming more common in children. That is why Type 2 diabetes is often called adult-onset diabetes.

Type 2 can often be prevented it the person maintains a healthy body weight and exercises regularly. Treatment for diabetes often includes medication; including insulin and focuses on maintain proper levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.

High blood sugar can occur for many reasons. For example, if the patient is not taking their diabetes medicines, not exercising, has been ill or under a lot of stress. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can occur if the patient is taking insulin or a sulfonylurea pills for diabetes. Early symptoms of hypoglycemia include the following:

- Sweating.

- Feeling weak.

Indian gooseberry, with its high vitamin C content, is considered precious in diabetes. A tablespoon of its juice, mixed with a cup of bitter gourd juice, taken daily for two months, will arouses the islets of Langerhans, that is, the isolated group of cells that secrete the hormone insulin in the pancreas. This mixture decreases the blood sugar in diabetes.

3. Diabetes treatment with Jambul Fruit

Jambul fruit is another useful home remedy. It is regarded in customary medicine as a specific against diabetes because of its effect on the pancreas. The fruit as such, the seeds, and fruit juice are all helpful in the treatment of this disease. The seeds contain a glucoside ‘jamboline’ which is supposed to have the power to check the pathological conversion of starch into sugar in cases of increased production of glucose.

The seeds must be dried and powdered. One teaspoon of this powder should be mixed in one cup of milk or water or half a cup of curd, and taken two times daily. The diabetic patient must be given ten grams of this ash on an empty stomach with water in the morning, and twenty grams in the afternoon, and in the evening an hour after taking meals. An equal amount of amla powder, jamun powder, and bitter gourd powder also makes a very useful remedy for diabetes. A teaspoon of this mixture once or twice a day would be efficient in checking the progress of the disease.

4. Diabetes treatment with Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a fine food in the diet of a diabetic patient. If grapefruits were eaten more generously, there would be much less diabetes. If you have sugar, use three grapefruits three times in a day. If you do not have sugar, but a propensity towards it and want to prevent it, use three a day.

5. Diabetes treatment with Fenugreek

The seeds of fenugreek have been found useful in the treatment of diabetes. Fenugreek seeds, when given in changeable doses of 25 gm to 100 gm daily, diminish reactive hyperglycaemia in diabetic patients. Levels of glucose, serum cholesterol, and triglycerides were also appreciably reduced in the diabetes patients when the seeds were consumed.

6. Diabetes treatment with Bengal Gram

Experiments have shown that the drinking of water extract of Bengal gram enhances the use of glucose in both diabetic and normal persons. When kept on a diet which incorporated liberal supplements of Bengal gram extract, the condition of tile patient improved considerably and his insulin requirement was decreased to about twenty units per day. Diabetes patients who are on a set diet which does not severely limit the intake of carbohydrates, but includes liberal amounts of Bengal gram extract, have shown significant improvement in their fasting blood sugar levels, glucose tolerance, urinary excretion of sugar, and general condition.

7. Diabetes treatment via Black Gram

For a milder sort of diabetes, two tablespoons of germinated black gram, taken with half a cup of fresh bitter gourd juice and a teaspoon of honey, is said to be valuable. It should be taken once each day for three to four months. A limit should be placed on the intake of carbohydrates. Still in severe cases, regular use of this combination, with other precautions, is helpful as a health-giving food for the prevention of various complications that may arise due to malnutrition in diabetics.

8. Diabetes treatment with Mango Leaves

The tender leaves of the mango tree are measured useful in diabetes. An infusion is prepared by soaking 15 gm of fresh leaves in 250 ml of water overnight, and squeezing them fine in the water in the moming. This filtrate should be taken every morning to manage early diabetes. As an option, the leaves should be dried in the shade, powdered and preserved for use when necessary. Half a teaspoon of this powder should be taken two times in a day.

9. Diabetes treatment via Parslane

The seeds of parslane are helpful in diabetes. A teaspoon of the seeds should be taken each day with half a cup of water for three to four months. It will raises the body’s own insulin and help in curing diabetes.

10. Diabetes treatment via Other Foods

Besides bitter gourd, certain other vegetables have been found helpful in diabetes. These comprise string beans, cucumber, onion, and garlic. Tea made of the pods of string beans is important in diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your body fails to produce insulin or produces insulin, but does not use it properly. Insulin is a naturally produced hormone that converts sugar and starches into energy. The cause of diabetes is not known – but there are factors that are known to contribute to the onset of diabetes. These factors include genetics, obesity, lack of exercise, and other environmental factors. There is no cure for diabetes, but the disease can be managed with a healthy lifestyle and, in some cases, injection of the insulin that your body does not produce.
