The Effect of Caffeine and Diabetes

Diabetes is a very common disease affecting children and adults around the world, but there are still many mysteries and debates on diabetes treatment. For example, the jury is still on the correlation between caffeine and diabetes.

In Japan, researchers have argued that these caffeine in the form of coffee or green tea May reduce the risk of diabetes. Medical experts, on the other hand, claim that caffeine may pose a higher risk for diabetes. A study conducted on participants aged 40 to 65 who drank black, green and oolong tea have shown that alcohol consumption at least three cups or more of these caffeine drinks a day could be result in a reduction of 33 per cent of their risk of diabetes. Other substances in coffee, however, may have negative effects on the metabolism of the body, creating other health problems. Modern research suggests that it is desirable to avoid caffeine, in order to reduce the risk of diabetes.

Research conducted by a respected university medical center suggested that the consumption of alcohol and meals to caffeine would result in an increase in insulin and glucose levels of participants with type 2 diabetes. Insulin is a natural component in the body that helps convert glucose into energy. A person with diabetes that caffeine drinks with a meal May suffer from a metabolic hindered. Participants who fasted during the study showed no significant change in their insulin or glucose.

Diabetics know that it is important to lower blood sugar. A level can be easily updated by eating the right foods and exercising regularly. Now, these new medical discoveries suggest that the reduction or elimination of caffeine is another way to control diabetes.

When a patient suffers from diabetes, his body does not have the ability to control levels of sugar in the blood. Many patients are also confronted with the inability of the body to produce enough insulin. Others have a hormone that is resistant to insulin. All these patients should be concerned about the quantity of tea and coffee they ingest that caffeine has been shown to have a direct negative effect on the levels of insulin.

Caffeine also creates a chemical called alloxan. This generates free radicals is a known cause of diabetes, aging and other diseases. Alloxan poisons not only important to create insulin cells, but also causes damage to the pancreas and May ultimately lead to cancer of the pancreas. When we drink caffeine we allow our bodies to create more alloxan, thus increasing the risk of diabetes or developing or have a condition worse.

Eliminating caffeine is not quite easy. Caffeine is found in food and beverage throughout the world. Tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks and many supplements contain high levels of caffeine and, therefore, massive doses of deadly alloxan. The choice of drinks decaffeinated is not always the best solution, because they may also contain certain levels of caffeine. The best way to limit caffeine to control or prevent diabetes is to eliminate altogether.

Caffeine be used for a health problem reserved for elderly patients. Now, young people face the same dangers. The soft drink industry is, unfortunately, the marketing of “power drinks” with dangerously high levels of caffeine for consumers in the age 15-21 demographic. Some fruit juices and even bottled water is infused with caffeine, tea and even respected manufacturers produce “great power” that the teas are packed with caffeine.

Anyone interested in reducing the risk of developing diabetes, a condition of life or simply a healthier lifestyle should take steps to reduce or eliminate Caffeine.

Awareness of Signs of Diabetes in Toddlers Helps Provide Them With Immediate Medication

Diabetes is common around the world. There may be several people who may not be even aware that they may be suffering from diabetes. It is a disease not just limited to adults; it can also affect toddlers as well. It is becoming common with growing children as well. This type of diabetes is called as juvenile diabetes or Type 1 diabetes. Children may not be even aware that there is something wrong with them. But, there are certain signs that parents and elders should be aware of, to recognize the signs of diabetes in toddlers. You can start medical treatment at early stage and ensure that their blood sugar levels remain stable and they live a healthier life.

There are different symptoms that can be seen in toddlers. However, there are few signs which should ring the warning bells in the minds of elders. Amongst children suffering from diabetes, whenever they eat, the food is broken down and sugar is released and absorbed into the bloodstream. It is carried to the cells to be used as energy for the different activities. However, the pancreas does not respond with insulin which leads to cells being unable to use the sugar. The cells are starved for energy and the sugar builds up in the blood. The children feel tired and fatigued due to lack of energy.

When there is excess sugar in the blood, the kidneys sense its level and start getting rid of it through urine. The point when kidneys allow sugar to enter the urine is called renal threshold. When the kidneys flush out excess sugar, it also takes the water in which it is dissolved. Thus the most common symptom is the excessive need to urinate. This is called polyuria. This in turn leads to dehydration. The body demands more water and the child feels increasingly thirsty. This is called as polydipsia. Children may also get the feeling of a dry sticky mouth or sore dry throat. Such children need huge quantity of water or any other fluids. Even if there is reduction in the amount of fluids there is excess *********. To avoid dehydration you should allow them to have fluids.

Some children may even start wetting the bed. The loss of sugar, dehydration and the inability to use blood sugar leads to weight loss even if they may be experiencing increase in appetite. It may be followed by tiredness, drowsiness and weakness. You may also notice diaper rash that is not ready to heal in spite of using various creams. There are other serious signs of diabetes among toddlers like stomach pain, feeling of nausea, vomiting and labored breathing.

If you notice any of these signs you should immediately approach your doctor for future action. You have to ensure that you monitor the blood sugar levels regularly. It may be a very traumatic experience for toddlers to get insulin shots regularly. Learn the proper way to provide adequate medication and care for your child. Create schedules for providing them with appropriate diet and medication.

Diabetes can be frightening for anyone but when it affects toddlers it causes great anxiety as the little ones are unable to tell what is happening to them. Make schedules for your child and stick to them if you want to control diabetes. The health of your kids is your priority and by being aware you can ensure that you child does not suffer from the ill effects and gets relief to the maximum possible extent.

All About Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that causes higher than normal blood sugars in its sufferers. It is of two types: (1) Type I diabetes, which normally affects young people. It occurs when the body doesn’t make enough insulin to rid the body of excess sugar. The only way to treat that disease is to provide insulin to make up for the lost insulin from the pancreas. (2) Type II diabetes generally affects older people and is a condition where the body makes insulin but the cells of the body don’t respond to the insulin in the body.

The disease of diabetes mellitus affects 20.8 million people in the US or 7% of the total population. Nearly 6 million of them do not know they have the disease. Both genetics and environment and heredity play a role in who gets diabetes and who doesn’t. Poor dietary habits and obesity play a large role in the development of type II diabetes.

There are many people who don’t have diabetes mellitus but who are suffering from prediabetes, also sometimes called insulin resistance. Their body doesn’t respond well to the insulin made by the pancreas but the situation isn’t bad enough to raise the blood sugar levels yet. The body has higher than normal amounts of insulin in the system but it is enough to compensate for the blood sugar. Eventually, however, many prediabetics go on to develop diabetes in a few years.

There are several tests for diabetes mellitus. The first is a fasting blood sugar. This is normally less than 100 mg per deciliter. In prediabetes, the number is often between 100 and 120 mg per deciliter. In diabetics, the number is often above 120 milligrams per deciliter and is often much higher than that.

The other test for diabetes mellitus is called the “three hour glucose tolerance test” or “3 hr GTT”. This involves getting a fasting blood sugar and then giving the individual a small bottle of highly sugared liquid to drink. Then the blood sugar is tested at one hour, two hours and three hours after drinking the sugared liquid. If any number is above 200, then diabetes is diagnosed.

Another test for diabetes mellitus is to check the glycosylated hemoglobin level. This is a measure of the amount of “sugar coated” blood cells in the body. The normal level is 6.0 and numbers above that is felt to be diabetes.

The treatment for diabetes mellitus is different depending on the type of diabetes the person has. Type I diabetes is almost always treated by insulin shots. This is because there is no insulin being put out by the pancreas and so insulin must be replaced. Type II diabetes is often treated with diet and medications. The medications are those that make the cells of the body respond better to the insulin being provided by the pancreas. There are also medications that act to lower the blood sugar directly.

Those with diabetes mellitus must check their blood sugars frequently with a glucometer or blood glucose meter. This may need to be done as often as six or more times per day for type I diabetes and the values reached determine the amount of insulin the person needs per dose. Insulin shots are given before each meal and sometimes at bedtime. Type II diabetics don’t often need to check their blood sugars that often. Sometimes it is just checked in the morning and then after the evening meal.

There is not a diet for diabetes. General guidelines exist, like “eat less fat and saturated fat and eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables” .. Your meal plan diabetes must be based on your individual needs. When it comes to what to eat and what not to eat for diabetics, advice is plentiful. With so much sense and advice from various sources, it may be difficult to determine what food you should be including in the framework of your diet. Instead what we should eat, why not start with the wrong types of foods for diabetics?

In principle, a diet low in saturated fats well controlled blood sugar that integrates weight control, exercise and less refined sugars is recommended. The control of blood sugar with diet, and in some cases, medication is the key. To keep blood sugar under control, diet strikes a balance between carbohydrates, fats, proteins and you take in. Very carbohydrates in processed foods packaged like fast food, white bread and flour products white, have a high glycemic index causing spikes in the sugar sector. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are undeniably linked to diabetes.

Learning about diabetes and making the right lifestyle changes can help keep blood sugar levels and fat as close to normal as possible and maintain a body weight. All these factors will help reduce the risk of developing serious complications of diabetes. The fat must be removed before cooking.

How The American Diabetes Association Helps You

The American Diabetes Association is a national nonprofit organization that promotes scientific research in diabetes, public information regarding diabetes and advocacy for diabetics. The organization was founded in 1940 and has programs operational in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. This is an organization that reaches hundreds of communities year round for the benefit of those with diabetes.

The stated mission of the American Diabetes Association is to find ways to prevent and cure diabetes as well as to improve the lives of all people who are affected by diabetes. Diabetes affects millions of Americans and the Association works on their behalf to find ways to make the disease easier to live with and possibly to prevent. It also supports research efforts at a number of academic organizations.

The American Diabetes Association funds scientific research and publishes the scientific findings that its researchers discover. The Association provides whatever information or service people with diabetes, their loved ones, health professionals or the public may need. Advocating for the rights of those with diabetes is also a part of what the association does on a routine basis.

The American Diabetes Association supports a national call center that received over 350,000 calls in the past year from people with questions, concerns or who needed support from the organization. It raises money to support research efforts, information programs and advocacy programs to help the 20 million individuals in the United States who suffers from diabetes mellitus.

The American Diabetes Association feels it has a responsibility to make sure that all work done under the auspices of the Association is above board. For that reason, they have developed a whistleblower program that allows people to report any suspected fraudulent or dishonest conduct related to resources supported by the Association.

One of the ways the American Diabetes Association raises money is through its online store. This is where they sell a large variety of cookbooks for diabetics, meal planning devices, self-care guides and other educational material for those who need help in managing their diabetes. They also have multiple events and fundraisers that increase the awareness of diabetes and raise money to support the various aspects of their mission.

An individual can become a member of the American Diabetic Association as an individual or as a health professional. In addition, the Association has thousands of children and adults who volunteer each year and various fundraisers and to help the Association function. Celebrities also help to make money for the organization every year.

Corporations can sponsor the American Diabetic Association. Through corporate sponsorship, research can be accomplished and a large amount of funds can help the Association function every year. In addition, the Association has coalitions and collaborations with organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the American College of Cardiology and the Diabetes Care Coalition. It even collaborates with Nickelodeon to help children understand the benefits of diabetic prevention and management.

Weight Loss and Carbohydrates… Some Basics

When it comes to weight loss diets, carbohydrates are becoming misunderstood nutrients. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy in your body. They are also one of the three macro nutrients required for nutrition. The other two are proteins and lipids.

Carbohydrates are organic molecules, made up of sugars called saccharids. A carbohydrate with one unit of sugar is called monosaccharides. Carbohydrates with two units of sugar are called disaccharides. Those with more than two sugars are generally referred to as polysaccharides.

Carbohydrates Classification:

Carbohydrates are grouped into two types depending on structures of their molecules.

1) Simple carbohydrates:- These are the mono and disaccharides e.g. glucose and fructose.

2) Complex carbohydrates:- These are polymers or polysaccharides. Examples include starch, fibre, and glycogen. Carbohydrates can only be also be grouped into three main forms as foods.

(i) Sugars: – These consist of simple carbohydrates both mono and disaccharides for example glucose (the blood sugar) galactose, the sugar found in milk and fructose the sugar found in fruits and honey are all mono-saccharides. Common disaccharides include sucrose the common table sugar which is glucose bonded to a fructose, lactose the main sugar in milk (glucose + galactose) and maltose a product of starch digestion (glucose + glucose)

(ii) Starch: – This is a complex carbohydrates and a polysaccharide. It is the principle form used by plants to store glucose. It is a polymer or a chain of bonded glucose molecules.

(iii) Fiber: – This is also a complex carbohydrate also called cellulose found in plants. This is one of the carbohydrates that cannot be broken down into sugar molecules in your digestive system. It passes through mostly undigested. In your body it cleans the digestive system keeping it healthy. Cellulose is probably the most abundant molecule in the biosphere e.g. wood is mostly cellulose, while cotton and paper is almost entirely cellulose.

Carbohydrates are essential energy sources though some kind when eaten often and in large quantities actually increase risk for diabetes and coronary heart disease. It also may result into increase in your body weight.

The digestive system handles all carbs in much the same way. Basically it breaks them down to glucose or any other simple sugar that can be absorbed into the body.

When we eat carbohydrates, its digestion starts in the mouth using saliva. Saliva has enzymes called amylace which breaks down polymers of starch. By the time starch is getting to the stomach it has been broken down to glucose. This glucose is then absorbed into the blood stream then the blood transports it to your body cells. Body cells absorb the glucose for the use of creating energy.

When excess carbohydrates are eaten, the body converts the extra glucose into glycogen. Glycogen is stored in skeletal muscles and liver. This acts as the glucose reservoir in your body. In case of energy shortage, glycogen is broken down to glucose in a process called glycogenolysis.

Glycogen is the immediate store of energy in your body. It gets depleted in about 24 hours if not replenished. Your diet should always consist of some energy for nutrition. Most of this energy is provided by the carbohydrates. In some circumstances, energy is provided by proteins and fats.

Good and bad Carbs:

Science on nutrition is proving that there are now healthy and unhealthy carbohydrates. They are using the glycemic index to be able to determine the healthier carbohydrates.

The Glycemic index measures how fast and how far blood sugar (glucose) rises after you eat a certain carbohydrate source of food. For example, white bread is considered to be a high glycemic index food. This is because it is quickly digested and absorbed into the blood stream. This consequently increases the blood sugar level very high and very fast. On the other hand whole wheat bread is digested much more slowly. This causes a lower and more gentle change in blood sugar level so it is said to have a low glycemic index.

Carbohydrate foods with high glycemic index have been linked to increase in both diabetes, unhealthy weight and heart disease while low glycemic index has been shown to control type two diabetes. You will find, even though the food pyramid recommends a mainly plant based nutritional diet, it insists on whole foods. This is because a major determinant of a food’s glycemic index is how processed the carbohydrate is.

Some determinants of GI (Glycemic Index) are listed below;

i) Processing:- The more finely ground grain is rapidly digested due to increased surface area hence a higher GI. Processing tends to remove the fibre rich outer bran. It also removes the vitamins and mineral rich inner germ, basically stripping the food all its nutrients except carbs.

ii) Fiber-content: – The bran for example shields the food from immediate rapid action by enzymes. This slows the enzymes effectiveness in releasing the sugar molecules into the blood stream.

iii) Ripeness: – The more ripe a fruit or vegetable the more the sugar it has hence a higher G.I.

iv) Structure of the starch: – Occurring in many structural forms, the more a starch isomer is branched the less easily is broken down. For example a potato is more easily broken down because its starch is only a long chain. This makes it a high G.I. food.

v)Fats and acid content :- The more fat and acid a food contains the slower its carbohydrates are turned into sugar.

Determining G.I. may end up being a little complicated. A combination of the above factors may have counter-intuitive results. But the rule is simple; always prefer whole grain products and them more natural forms of carbohydrates. Use them more often than highly processed grains, just as recommended in any good weight loss diet.
